Top Attractions in Marrakech
Jemaa el-Fnaa
The beating heart of Marrakech’s medina and one of the most famous squares in all of Africa. By day, you’ll find juice stalls, henna artists, and halal street food vendors. As evening falls, the square transforms into a vibrant performance space, storytellers, drummers, and dancers gather as the call to prayer echoes through the air. It’s a place where Islamic tradition and Moroccan folklore intertwine. Visitors can also access surrounding rooftop cafes for a peaceful view of the chaos below, especially after maghrib.
Koutoubia Mosque
The largest and most iconic mosque in Marrakech, dating back to the 12th century. The 77-meter minaret is visible from almost anywhere in the city and served as a model for other famous minarets such as the Giralda in Seville. Built under the Almohad Caliphate, it represents the height of Islamic architecture in North Africa. Non-Muslims cannot enter the mosque, but Muslims are welcome for prayer, and the surrounding gardens offer a serene setting to reflect, especially before or after salah.
Bahia Palace
This 19th-century palace was built by Grand Vizier Si Moussa and later expanded by his son. The name Bahia means "brilliance", and the palace lives up to it with its 150+ rooms, elaborately carved cedar ceilings, marble-paved courtyards, and traditional Islamic geometric patterns. The architecture reflects the grandeur of Moroccan Islamic craftsmanship, and walking through its peaceful halls offers a glimpse into the opulence of past Islamic governance. Though now empty of furniture, the atmosphere remains majestic and spiritual.
Majorelle Garden
A lush, peaceful botanical garden tucked away in the heart of the city. Originally designed by French artist Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s and later restored by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, it features exotic plants, trickling fountains, and the famous cobalt Majorelle Blue buildings. The garden includes a Museum of Berber Culture, showcasing the rich heritage of the indigenous Muslim people of Morocco. A perfect retreat for families or couples seeking calm and reflection.
Saadian Tombs
These royal tombs date back to the Saadian dynasty of the 16th century, particularly the reign of Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur. Hidden behind the Kasbah Mosque and sealed for centuries, they were rediscovered in 1917. Inside, you’ll find finely detailed chambers decorated with Quranic inscriptions, mosaic tiles, Italian marble, and carved cedar wood, a powerful testament to the Islamic respect for the deceased. The tombs offer a moving look into Islamic burial traditions and dynastic history.
The Souks of the Medina
A spiritual and sensory experience woven into the very fabric of Moroccan life. These bustling alleyways are home to merchants selling spices, perfumes, traditional Islamic clothing, handmade rugs, lanterns, leather goods, ceramics, and more. Bargaining is part of the fun and cultural norm. The souks are divided by specialty, from Souk Semmarine for clothes to Souk el-Attarine for spices and natural remedies. As you wander, you’ll hear the call to prayer, pass local worshippers, and feel the pulse of Islamic commerce and brotherhood.
